I started my writing career as a columnist and investigative reporter and eventually became the first woman editor of two different papers. Along the way, my team and I won numerous state and several national awards, including the National Journalism Award for Public Service. In 2011, I was awarded the Keeper of the Flame Lifetime Achievement Award for Journalism. Now I write historical romance and contemporary romantic suspense.

Bite me
My brother ran into this fellow while hiking this weekend. He always sees rattlesnakes. I've never seen a single one, not even when I was volunteering for Boulder Mountain Parks and patrolling trails for 12 hours every weekend. Then again, I've seen a mountain lion up close — very close — and a mama bear with three cubs, and he hasn't. So...
We had another special edition at the paper, this one devoted to green living, and it took far more time than anyone had imagined. For the past two weeks, I've been working, eating and sleeping — and that's about it. Thank goodness this is sort of the last one for a while. Okay, okay, we have another for the Fourth of July, but that's nothing like these others.
These past two weeks have also been extremely unusual in that every single day we've had torrential downpours — sometimes two or three times a day. Even stranger, we've had tornadoes almost every day. I grew up here being told that "we don't have tornadoes here because we're too close to the mountains." Well, someone needs to tell that to the eight tornadoes that have touched down around here in the past two weeks. Obviously, they didn't get the memo.
We had our first tornado in 1996 — two on the same day, actually. I watched one of them touch down, utterly fascinated. They were pretty small. A friend of mine from Alabama just laughed at them and called them "cute." Then we didn't have another till last year when that enormous mile-wide twister touched down in Windsor. That's the tornado that wrecked my roof. It also killed someone. And now eight this year.
I hope to be back in the writing swing this weekend. Naked Edge is due in New York on July 15. I can't miss that deadline. So that means I might be taking an Internet break. The pub date has been bumped back to March '10, and I expect it might hit April '10 before long...
I have eight chapters plus and epilogue to write.

The snake looks very familiar. I grew up with rattlers all around, as well as coyotes, scorpions and other nasty critters.
I'm glad the paper will be slowing down so you can get back to your writing. Some day you will need to take a break and have a vacation away from all of it, OK, maybe not the writing, but away from Colorado. LOL
Hi, Barbara — Thanks for the good wishes. I can't wait to read the story either. Right now I'm stuck in the "this sucks" phase of writing, which is not fun.
As for the snake, if you click on the photo it gets bigger, and you can see that it was staring straight at my brother. From the size of its rattle, I'm guessing it's at least 9 or 10 years old.
I hate spiders. Don't mind snakes as much. Mice are fine as long as they're not in my house!!!! LOL!
Hi, Debbie — Maybe you met one of his cousins. I bet he has Okie relatives. We have scorpions here, too, but not down in the city quite as much as in hogback type areas, the adobe hills and such.
Yeah, I hope things slow down. I need to hire the person who's going to help me, or it won't get better. It's just so busy lately! Which is really good, because most papers are crashing. So there's a silver lining, of course. :-)
As for a break... I'm trying to find a rental cabin or a B&B or a retreat in some very pretty place where I can go for a week just to write. Or... I might go to Wales. Not that I have the bucks for it yet, but I'm working on it. I really, really need to get away. Yeah.
Remember when we had that one at the Daily? Grimsland took a pic of the funnel and I think it actually touched down at 75th and Arapahoe...I was thinking it was in '97. I think the Camera used our pic.....ah...good times. :O)
Hey, you! Long, long time, no see! And that's really ridiculous, considering that you basically live around the corner...
YES, I do remember the one at 75th and Arapahoe. That's the one I watched touch down. I was on my way home when the storm hit. Remember the mounds of hail? I thought that was ’96, though. You may be right. Oh, those were the days...

You should try living here with all the poisonous snakes AND spiders we have. It's fun!

We have rattlesnakes and coral snakes — both deadly. And we have two species of poisonous spiders — black widows and brown recluses. Then there are scorpions.
But, Lucy, no place on earth has the concentration of poisonous creepy-crawlies that Australia has! Heck, you all even have a poisonous mammal! I wonder why that is????
***shudder***
snakes are vile evil beings. I shot a rattler once...my dad had the rattle for a keychain...I wonder what ever happened to that. hmmm...

Hi, Ronlyn — I remember you telling me that story! I thought it was amazing that you actually hit the rattler. And the rattle keychain? Not many people have one of those.
Of course you want to finish it! We all do :) But take your time and do it justice...you deserve it and so do Gabe and Kat. We can wait :)

ACKKKKK I absolutely am petrified of snakes. The hubby and I actually saw one in the Smokey Mts. when we went hiking to one of the waterfalls I just about had a stroke! I was like I got to get out of here we high tailed it as fast as our little feet would carry us back to the car.
Hang in there girl you'll beat that deadline! We got faith in ya! ;)
